Moderne logistische Netzwerke sind oft geographisch verteilt und haben eine komplexe, großskalige Struktur. Die Dynamik der Material- und Informationsflüsse in solchen Netzwerken ist meistens nichtlinear und wird durch mehrere interne und externe Störungen beeinflusst. Die mathematische Modellierung logistischer Netzwerke erleichtert die Untersuchung und Vorhersage von für die Wirtschaft relevanten Eigenschaften. In diesem interdisziplinären Forschungsprojekt werden solche Netzwerke vom Standpunkt der Stabilitäts- und Approximationstheorie in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik (BIBA) und dem Institut für Mathematik der Universität Würzburg untersucht. Dabei stellt die Einbeziehung eines Szenarios aus der Praxis eines Herstellers für Pumpenaggregate einen integralen Bestandteil dar.

Im Rahmen der Untersuchungen wurden verschiedene mathematische Modelle für Netzwerke erstellt, die die Struktur des Logistiknetzwerks mit den dynamischen Systemen verbinden, welche die in den Knoten und Kanten stattfindenden dynamischen Prozesse beschreiben. Die Knoten repräsentieren einzelne Standorte des Netzwerks. Diese setzen sich aus den Lieferanten, den Produktions- und Distributionsstandorten sowie den Kunden zusammen. Anhand der Kanten zwischen den Knoten werden die Transportverbindungen abgebildet.

Stabilitätseigenschaften solcher Netzwerke werden im Rahmen der so genannten Input-to-State-Stability (ISS) analyisiert. Zu diesem Zweck wurden Stabilitätskriterien für kontinuierliche Systeme mit gemischter ISS-Formulierung sowie für hybride Systeme entwickelt. Diese Kriterien basieren auf der Struktur der Netzwerke. Diese Kriterienentwicklungen wurden durch simulationsbasierte Untersuchungen begleitet.

Neben der Stabilität eines Logistiknetzwerks ist dessen Robustheit eine wichtige Eigenschaft, die in diesem Projekt ebenfalls untersucht wurde. In diesem Zusammenhang definiert die Robustheit die Art und das Ausmaß der kleinsten Störung, die das Netzwerk in einen instabilen Zustand überführt.

Aufgrund ihrer Größe sind die Modelle für Untersuchungen oftmals nur schwer zugänglich. Deshalb wurde eine Methode zur Modellreduktion entwickelt, die das ursprüngliche Verhalten des Netzwerks bewahrt. Grundlagen für die Reduktion sind ein Ranking der Bedeutung der einzelnen Knoten für das gesamte Netzwerk sowie die Topologie des ursprünglichen Netzwerks. Die Idee besteht darin, die Knoten mit einem kleinen Rang aus dem Modell zu entfernen oder mit anderen Knoten zu aggregieren. Die reduzierten Modelle bilden die Grundlage für die sich anschließenden Stabilitätsbetrachtungen. Zurzeit wird der Zusammenhang zwischen den Stabilitätseigenschaften der reduzierten und der ursprünglichen Modelle erforscht.
