Have you ever seen this image? Maybe you've seen it here, here, here, here, here, here or here. Since I find the above image in scientific talks and publications frequently, I thought it would be good to tell the story of this picture…
Well, this image was taken in April 2001 on a scout training for group leaders with a Sony-something digital camera. Actually I just played around with this (at that time fascinating) toy. But afterwards I realized that the camera had quite a good chip and a very good lens and hence produced images of good quality (almost noise free, very sharp, no distortion…). So, I browsed the images I've taken and found this very nice image of Gunnar Seidel (who is now an actor and you may recognize him here or here). When I started to work in the field of image processing I used this image frequently as a test image since it has lots of different features (sharp edges, textures, smooth parts,…). Some of my colleagues started to use it as well and the eye started its trip. Who knows how far it will travel. I wish it all the best.
If you want to use the eye, you can take the above version (as .png) or this .tif version and you can be sure that you have an uncompressed, unscaled, undilated original image. In times of uncertainty I sometimes ask my tablet oracle.
The tablet oracle translates my scribbles into helpful hints:

The tablet oracle uses german, because the language has more mysteries (and I know it better).
Some nice examples of good hints of the oracle:
