Study course: Mathematics (Lehramt Primarstufe und Sekundarstufe I) (Teaching) (will expire on 9/30/2011)

What is expecting a maths teacher-to-be at university and what does our university expect from him/her? Besides showing the desireable readiness to actively organise your studies you have to meet the formal demands that are laid out in the study and examination regulations. This Website is meant to provide you with useful information about these issues.

General notes on Mathematics (teacher training)

Students of „Lehramt an öffentlichen Schulen“ [teaching at public schools] - that's the official term - can chose between two different teaching careers:

a) Teaching Primarstufe [pupils at the age of 6 to 10] and Sekundarstufe I [11 to approx. 16] (focussing on one of the two) or

b) Teaching Sekundarstufe II [which is almost equivalent to sixth form] (either exclusively S II or - as is recommended - doing S I as a complement).

A compulsory entry-level test for all 1st semester students of teacher training Primarstufe and Sekundarstufe I (who intend to start with their studies in the winter semester 2005/06) with mathematics as their subject will take place at the Universität Bremen (in the auditoria of NW1) on September 7 from 10:00 to 12:00 am. For a site plan see http://www.uni-bremen.de/lageplan. An invitation in writing will be sent by the secretariat for students.

Due to high student figures, first semester lectures for mathematics can only be attended by those students who pass the test. A preparatory course will be offered to the students who have failed the exam. The regular course can be commenced in the summer semester 2005, after successfully completing the preparatory course (all regular first semester lectures will of course have to be made up for in the following semesters).

Students will usually study two subjects. In addition you will be required to study „Erziehungs- und Gesellschaftswissenschaften“ (EGW) [education and social science]. Your two main subjects and EGW will be weighted about 3:3:2 (with regard to the amount of time spent for your lectures this means 60:60:40 hours in total - a lecture that runs four hours per week for one semester counts as 4 hours, for example).

The "Lehrerausbildungsgesetz" [teacher's education law] of Bremen demands a more or less identical eight semester study period from both groups of Lehramt students (P/S I and S II). You will find that a number of lectures will be aimed at both P/S I students and S II or diploma students. The eight semester study period will be supplemented with a one semester placement at a school. Finally you will have to write a thesis in line with the First State Examination. You can choose to write the thesis in any of your three subjects.

The course of study consists of

- the Grundstudium (4 semesters), which you will complete with an exam (which is called "Zwischenprüfung")

- a placement at a school (in the 5th semester)

- the Hauptstudium (another 4 semesters), which will be completed with the First State Examination.

This first phase of teacher training is followed by by a second phase that includes the Referendariat (a practical training in a school) and the Second State Examination. However, university is not involved in this second phase.

You can download the examination regulations on Link (pdf).

Both professional and methodological education take place within Faculty 03 (mathematics and informatics). The only exception to this rule is the methodological education of P/S I students who have chosen to focus on Primarstufe. That takes place in faculty 12 (education and social science).

Examination regulations distinguish between five mathematical areas that will be referred to below:

1) Algebra and basics of mathematics
2) Analysis
3) Geometrie and topology
4) Applied mathematics
5) Methodology of teaching maths (didactics)

I. EDUCATION OF PRIMARSTUFE AND SEKUNDARSTUFE I TEACHERS WITH MAIN AREA PRIMARSTUFE

In Grundstudium (1st to 4th semster), students of teacher training for Primarstufe (P) and Sekundarstufe I (SI) with main area Primarstufe ought to complete the two-semester lecture "geometry and linear algebra" (which consists of 4 hours lecture and 4 hours workshop per week), the first-semester lecture "Integrierte Eingangsphase Lehrerbildung", in the third semester one of the two 4+2 hours classes (a) "Elemente der Stochastik“ [elements of stochastics] or "Elemente der Zahlentheorie und Algebra“ [elements of algebra and theory of number] and in the fourth semester one of the two lectures (b) "Neue Medien in der Mathematik“ [new media in mathematics] or "Analysis“.

The Zwischenprüfung, an intermediate examination, is to be taken until the beginning of the fifth semester. It is done either as an oral exam (30 minutes) or as a written exam (3-4 hours) and includes the areas 1 or 2 and 5 (as listed above). For more precise information, especially regarding the required assignments, please look at http://www.bildung.bremen.de/sfb/bildung/lasl/p_mat.pdf. A leaflet can be obtained from the administration of faculty 03.

In the Hauptstudium (5th to 8th semester) students are required to complete the lectures of (a) and (b) that they have not attended in Grundstudium, they have to attend didactic lectures and carry out practical training in schools.

The Hauptstudium is followed by the 1st state examination. The written exam, which is part of this, can be taken from the sixth semester on and has to consist of topics from the areas 1 to 4.
The topics of the Zwischenprüfung must not be repeated in the written exam.

What is more, a paper has to be written in one of the two subjects (mathematics or the other subject the student is becoming a teacher in) or in didactics - which in the case of mathematics may refer completly to area 5. The paper is supposed to be completed in the 9th semester.

The final exam in mathematics consists of two oral exams (apart from the parts that have already been mentioned above) of 30 minutes each. One covers topics from the areas 1-4, the other one deals with area 5 in relation to Primarstufe. For more precise information, please see http://www.bildung.bremen.de/sfb/bildung/lasl/p_mat.pdf.

II. EDUCATION OF PRIMARSTUFE AND SEKUNDARSTUFE I TEACHERS WITH MAIN AREA SEKUNDARSTUFE I

In Grundstudium students of teacher training Primarstufe (P) and Sekundarstufe I (SI) with main areaSekundarstufe I are to attend the two-semester lecture "Geometrie und Lineare Algebra“ [geometry and linear algebra] (which consists of 4 hours lecture and 4 hours workshop per week). Furthermore they have to complete the two-hours lecture "Einführung in das Mathematiklehramtsstudium" [introduction to teaching mathematics] in the first semester (or a six-hours multi-disciplinary introduction course for teacher training students) and one of the two 4+2 hours lectures (a) "Elemente der Stochastik" [elements of stochastics] or "Elemente der Zahlentheorie und Algebra“ [elements of algebra and theory of number] in the third semester.
In the fourth semester, students are to take the course "Neue Medien in der Mathematik“ [new media in mathematics] or one lecture from the areas 3 or 4, and one didactic course "Grundzüge der Mathematikdidaktik" [basics of mathematical didactics]. The latter includes the didactic preparation for the one-semester practical training in a school.

The Zwischenprüfung (an intermediate examination) is to be taken until the beginning of the fifth semester. Two of the mathematical areas 1 to 4 are subject of this exam. The Zwischenprüfung can either be taken as an oral examination (30 minutes about each of the two areas) or as a written exam (duration 3-4 hours, both areas are included at approximately the same share). For more precise information, especially regarding the required assignments, please look at http://www.bildung.bremen.de/sfb/bildung/lasl/p_mat.pdf. A leaflet can be obtained from the administration of faculty 03.

A practical training at a school will be carried out in the fifth semester, which will be accompanied by evaluation courses in didactics of both subjects and pedagogics.

The following courses are to be completed from the sixth to the ninth semester:

  • "Analysis“

  • the lectures of (a) "Elemente der Stochastik“ and "Elemente der Zahlentheorie und Algebra“and (b) "Neue Medien in der Mathematik“ and „Analysis" that have not yet been completed in Grundstudium

  • didactic lectures, such as
o didactics of algebra or didactics of geometry (2+2 hours each)
o mathematical didactic courses with alternating topics

The Hauptstudium is followed by the 1st state examination. The written exam, which is part of this, can be taken from the sixth semester on and has to consist of topics from the areas 1 to 4.
The topics of the Zwischenprüfung must not be repeated in the written exam.

What is more, a paper has to be written in one of the two subjects (mathematics or the other subject the student is becoming a teacher in) or in didactics - which in the case of mathematics may refer completly to area 5. The paper is supposed to be completed in the 9th semester.

The final exam in mathematics consists of two oral exams (apart from the parts that have already been mentioned above). One covers topics from the areas 1-4, the other one deals with area 5. The latter takes at least 20 minutes. For more precise information, please see http://www.bildung.bremen.de/sfb/bildung/lasl/p_mat.pdf.
